History Alive! was founded in 1991 by Richard Pawling, an adjunct cultural geography professor at Penn State University/Berks-Lehigh Valley College and former National Park Service regional Freeman Tilden award winner. The focus of History Alive! is the development and presentation of historically accurate living history/first person interpretive characterizations and heritage music programs that are both entertaining and educational. He also offers training workshops in living history and general interpretive techniques. Other than the recent addition of Conrad Weiser (Pennsylvania's 18th century provincial peacekeeper) to his repertoire, the majority of characters represented by Pawling are the blue collar "nobodies"--America's forgotten heroes (coal miners, loggers, railroad trackmen, wagoners, ironworkers, and canal captains). He has also developed a heritage music group, "Rich Pawling & Not Forgotten" as well as programs on 19th century baseball. His four-person group, "The Boys of Base Ball" has been featured at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
As stated in the corporate philosophy of History Alive!, "History is not merely a chronological record of events that took place in the past with no relevance to us today. History is People! History starts coming alive when you realize it is people that make history - not dry facts in a textbook. By looking at the past, we can learn more about both who we are in the present, and where we are going in the future." To continue to support their philosophy, "History is People!" has evolved into the company trademark for products, including videos produced by Time Warner and CD's that interprets American history through the traditional and working songs of the past.
History Alive! has performed or conducted training throughout the United States and Canada. For additional information on the various programs available, as well as a complete client and awards listing, please visit www.richpawling.com.
